This is documentation of a performance in Alfred, NY in January 2016. I used a large piece of industrial sandpaper as a ground on which to grind a chunk of raw clay into powder. The movements of manual labor and large scale drawing are combined into a layered dance of mark-making. For more work go to www.baileyarend.com

Drawing Into Dust

Raw clay, industrial sandpaper, body, 2016.

Drawing into Dust is a performance in which a piece of raw clay is ground into powder on a large sheet of sandpaper. It is at once an act of destruction and creation: the clay form is eroded and reduced, while building up layers of marks and patterns which record its destruction. The actions of the performer are combined and layered to reveal the dance of labor and drawing.
